Lots of people have been contacting us regarding the items that were shown on Afternoon Show Dog Show on RTE last week......

The Dog Jumper is the Hooded Dog Jumper and it was worn by a Pointer and it's the XLarge which is 60cm long and the colour that was worn was Coffee - it also comes in Grey.

Then the King Charles had the Strawberry Bling T-Shirt, which was much too big for him, the size he was wearing was 43cm long, so if you have a king charles buy a smaller size!!

Then the collars and leads were all from the Hamish McBeth Range of Leather Collars.

The Collar that the pointer was wearing was the Lucy Tan and Matching Lead and the King Charles was wearing the Keado Pink Collar and Lead.

We just added our new Pet safety and travel page and we will have more products soon, but in the meantime here's some information on SAFETY

Some pets love cars – others would much rather stay put for the rest of their lives, especially if the end destination is the vet.

Train them young. Cats generally don’t like cars, but puppies can be trained fairly easily to become good travellers. Play with the puppy inside the car when it is stationary. Then switch the engine on. When it is used to this, start taking the dog for short rides. Crate them. For larger dogs, it is a good idea to crate them, especially for long journeys. This will also protect a dog in case of an accident. Many animals will feel safer inside their crate, and therefore will put up less of a performance.
Pet carriers. If an animal does not like travelling, then it is very dangerous to transport them in a car, unless they are in a proper pet carrier of some sort. A clawing cat, or a yelping puppy can easily distract the driver and cause an accident. Don’t use a cardboard box – it is too easy to escape from these. Pets that don’t like car rides, are also known to urinate and defecate in the car. If the pet is in a carrier, you can line the bottom with newspapers and a plastic sheet to prevent damage. Remember, a paste of bicarbonate of soda gets stains and smells out of car upholstery.
Pet partitions. When travelling with big dogs, it is a good idea to have part of the car partitioned, so that the driver cannot be distracted. One often sees this when owners travel with more than one large dog – especially if it is a smallish car. But never put an animal in the boot of the car. Many cars, especially older ones, could emit strong exhaust fumes into the boot.

"Calling All Groomers"

Check out our new facility listing groomers. If you are a Dog Groomer who would like to be listed contact Tim on 087 614 26 35.

The reason we decided to do this was because in error the Golden Pages put the Pets Fun Club phone number in the Pet Grooming section and I'm refusing people over and over again daily and normally when they ring I'm out-and-about. We will have access to the list and give out the number advise them to visit the pet fun club Dog Grooming informaton page. We will include as many groomers as possible and make sure it becomes a page of reference for people looking for pet groomers nationwide.

Exercise

Pre-Exercise Checklist
Have your dog checked by a veterinarian before beginning any exercise program and ask about appropriate exercise for your individual dog.
Remember to start slow and build up gradually.
Never roller blade, roller skate, skateboard, bicycle or drive a vehicle with your dog following on a leash. It’s too easy for him to dart in front of you and be injured.
Do not exercise during the heat of the day. Dogs can quickly become overheated and suffer heat stroke which can be deadly.
Keep your dog on leash and do not allow him to impose on others or their property. Be sure to pick up after your dog.
Watch out for other animals that could attack your dog.
Provide plenty of rest stops as dogs can suffer strained muscles and tendons or sore paws.
Provide plenty of cool water for your dog before, during, and after exercise. You should stay hydrated too.
Learn to identify dogs at greater risk of heat stroke, how to recognize the signs of heat exhaustion and dehydration and how they must be treated.

Older Dogs

Give Your Dog Proper Exercise - Obesity and arthritis are two of the most common problems experienced by older dogs, and regular exercise can help stave off both. Exercising helps burn extra calories and can also help reduce arthritis pain. Exercise helps improve circulation and digestion as well. However, if your dog does have arthritis, consult your veterinarian before beginning an exercise program. Leisurely daily walks or a game of catch is good. If your dog has not exercised for a long time, start out slowly, then continue with a daily program. If you see your dog overexerting himself, stop the activity. Also, senior dogs may not have as great a tolerance for weather extremes as they once had. Always be sure he has plenty of water to drink during and after exercise.

Caring for your Pet...

Many adult problem behaviours have their origins in having been inadvertently rewarded by owners when their dogs were puppies. Obviously it is better, and easier, not to "teach" your puppy the "wrong" behaviours in the first instance rather than to try and correct and retrain the dog in later life.
Firstly, how do you inadvertently reward behaviours? Rewards for a dog generally fall into 3 categories. The first and most obvious is food; second are games or toys; and, finally and probably as important as food, is your attention. Dogs are social animals and, therefore, the attention you give is very rewarding. How and when you give attention will "train" the puppy to continue to give behaviours which trigger this reward.
Attention is made up of 3 parts: touch (petting, stroking etc), tone of voice and, most importantly as far as the dog is concerned, eye contact.
